When it comes to wine, few places are more impressive than a storied vineyard. And with a growing interest in enotourism—travel that involves visiting vineyards and participating in wine-related activities—vineyards around the world are transforming their fields into charming destinations for weekend wine getaways. These top vineyards offer winery retreats, restaurants and other amenities for visitors to enjoy, along with tours of the wine production process and tasting rooms. From Napa Valley to Bordeaux, these top vineyards are a destination worth traveling for.
The best wineries in the world showcase a commitment to creating exceptional wines and offering guests an unforgettable experience. They have jaw-dropping scenery, gourmet restaurants, wine-related activities, interactive sommeliers and cellars with a history. The list includes many renowned vineyards in Italy, France and Australia, but also first-time entrants from India, Bulgaria and Greece. And while the criteria for being named one of The World's Best Vineyards is not well-defined, it requires that a vineyard be open to the public and provide a premium experience.
This year, Argentina dominated the rankings with three vineyards making the cut, including Catena Zapata, which took the top spot. The family-owned winery has been a driving force behind reviving Malbec and pushing Mendoza's vineyards higher up into the Andes mountains. Catena Zapata was also lauded for its research into the region's distinct terroirs.
The next best vineyard is Chile's VIK, which climbed up the ranks from 2022 to take the number three position. This unique winery combines a Frank Gehry-designed hotel and restaurant with a pristine mountain setting in the Millahue Valley. VIK also boasts a state-of-the-art laboratory that delves into the effects of climate change on the vines and terroir.
Rounding out the top five is Napa Valley's Chateau Montelena, which won the number two slot. The historic winery is a must-visit for anyone who loves Napa's acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon. The property offers tours of the vineyard and wine production facilities, a luxury hotel and restaurant, cooking classes and even an on-site spa that uses beauty products made from grapes and berries.
Other notable vineyards on this year's list include Bordeaux's Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte, which won the fifth position and is a leader in sustainable viticulture. The winery's oenological park includes walking trails through the "forest of the senses" and the use of horses to plough its fields, as well as a restaurant run by celebrity chef Francis Mallman.
Australia's d'Arenberg, in the seventeenth place, is home to some of the country's oldest vines and has earned praise for its sustainability-focused organic and biodynamic wines. The winery also has an impressive d'Arenberg Cube, which is known for its sculptural form and sweeping views of McLaren Vale.
